Peter Obi Speaks on Opposition and Democracy Ahead of 2027 Election

Presidential aspirant Peter Obi has shared his views on how he would handle political opposition if he becomes Nigeria's president in 2027.

Obi, who was a former governor of Anambra State and a presidential candidate under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said his administration would not use government power to target political opponents.

Speaking during an interview with the international media platform DW, Obi explained that he believes a strong opposition is important for good governance. According to him, democracy works better when different political views are allowed and respected.

He said that if elected, his focus would be on making government institutions stronger and ensuring that the democratic system works as it should. He noted that he would not use his office to go after people because of their political beliefs or party affiliation.

"The system must work the way it should function. I would never prosecute anybody politically, I would never do anything wrong while in office," Obi said during the interview.

Obi also stressed the importance of having opposition parties that can hold the government accountable. He said a healthy democracy needs voices that can challenge the government and offer alternative ideas.

"I would not go after opponents. I would make sure that we have strong opposition parties that can stand and say no. In times of problems, I would invite them," he added.

The former governor also spoke about the security challenges in Northern Nigeria. He said that if he were president, he would bring together opposition leaders and stakeholders from the region to discuss and find lasting solutions to insecurity.

"If I was president, with what is happening in the North, I would invite all opposition parties and I would sit with stakeholders in the North to discuss and come up with solutions," Obi said.

He maintained that dialogue, inclusive governance, and respect for democratic institutions are important steps in addressing Nigeria's security, economic, and political challenges.

Obi has consistently said that his administration would focus on institutional reforms, accountability, and collaboration across different political groups to promote national development.

Many Nigerians have reacted to his comments, with discussions ongoing about the role of opposition in strengthening democracy in the country.
