Chelsea Announce Signing of Experienced Midfielder Jordan Henderson From Brentford

By Stanislaus Obikwelu August 04, 2026

Chelsea Football Club has confirmed the signing of England international midfielder Jordan Henderson from fellow Premier League side Brentford on a free transfer.

The former Liverpool captain, who was part of the England squad at the recent FIFA World Cup held in North America, has joined the Blues on a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

The Premier League club announced the deal on Monday, August 3, 2026, describing the 36-year-old as an experienced addition to Xabi Alonso's squad for the new season.

The midfielder, who has won eight trophies in his career including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, has signed a two-year contract with the Blues and will join his new teammates ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Speaking after completing the move, Henderson expressed his excitement about joining the London club and working under the new management at Stamford Bridge.

Considering the stature of the club, the manager who I have huge respect for, and the quality of players here, this was a fantastic opportunity I could not refuse, Henderson said.

I was also impressed by how committed the ownership is to making Chelsea successful and moving the club forward. For me, it is about giving my best every day, both on and off the pitch, to support the players around me and help the team as much as I can. I am really excited to get started.

Henderson's departure from Brentford was confirmed last week after his contract was terminated by mutual consent following interest from Chelsea, with the Bees allowing him to leave despite having one year left on his deal.

The 36-year-old midfielder enjoyed a successful spell at Liverpool, where he won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. He left Anfield in 2023 to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq before moving to Ajax six months later.

He made his return to the Premier League last year when he signed a two-year contract with Brentford, making 34 appearances for the club last season, a campaign that earned him a place in England's World Cup squad.

Henderson, who has earned 91 caps for England, was included in the Three Lions squad for the 2026 World Cup but featured for only a limited time before sustaining an arm injury later in the tournament.

According to checks by DailyVista247, Henderson becomes Chelsea's oldest signing since BlueCo took over the club in 2022 and the eighth first-team signing under Xabi Alonso this summer.

He joins Chelsea shortly after the club completed the signing of fellow experienced forward Danny Welbeck from Brighton, as the Blues were keen to add experience to the squad this summer.

The England international is expected to provide leadership both on and off the pitch, with Chelsea highlighting his commitment to supporting players around him and helping the team as much as possible.
