The Premier League club made the announcement on Monday on their official website liverpoolfc.com, as they moved to strengthen an injury-ravaged defence ahead of the new season.
Araujo joins the Merseyside side to provide additional options in central defence. The club has been managing several absences in that area, including Jeremy Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni, and Joe Gomez, who have been dealing with fitness issues in recent months.
The 27-year-old centre-back will wear the number 33 shirt for Liverpool. The number has previously been worn by several former players during their time at Anfield.
According to reports, the deal includes an option for Liverpool to make the move permanent next summer for around €55 million. Liverpool will cover his wages for the duration of the campaign, however the defender has taken a pay cut to facilitate the move to Anfield.
Sources disclosed that Liverpool have not paid a loan fee for Araujo's services this season, with Barcelona saving a significant portion of wages that can be used to register their own summer signings.
Araujo arrives at a time when Liverpool are facing mounting defensive problems. The departures of Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson, as well as Joe Gomez's muscle injury in the club's opening pre-season match, have forced the club to strengthen its options.
The Uruguayan international made 214 appearances and scored 14 goals for Barcelona across seven seasons before making the move to the Premier League for the upcoming campaign.

Speaking to the club's official website after completing the move, Araujo expressed his excitement about joining Liverpool and starting a new chapter in his career.

He added that the move came at the right time in his career after falling out of favour at Barcelona under the current management.
I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard about the interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly. As I say, I am super happy to be here and excited to get started. I am glad about the interest and it was the right move at the right time, the centre-back stated.
Liverpool's new manager Andoni Iraola will now have an additional defensive option as preparations continue for the new Premier League season, which begins on August 21, with the Reds aiming to challenge for the title.
Araujo and Jacquet both featured in a 2-0 friendly victory over Italian club Como at Anfield on Sunday, with the latter also scoring a goal, giving fans a glimpse of the new defensive partnership.
