Team Nigeria has finished as the highest-ranked African country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, after placing seventh on the final medal table with an impressive haul that confirmed the country's continental dominance.
According to the official standings released by the Glasgow 2026 organizers, Nigeria won a total of 24 medals, including 10 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze. The result placed the country inside the top 10 overall and ahead of all other African teams at the Games, making it Africa's best performing nation.
Australia finished at the top of the medal table with 171 medals, made up of 70 gold, 45 silver, and 56 bronze. England came second with 110 medals, followed by Canada in third with 62 medals. India and host nation Scotland completed the top five with 39 medals each, while New Zealand finished sixth, just ahead of Nigeria in seventh position.
Nigeria's success was driven by strong performances in athletics, para sports, weightlifting and judo, with the contingent maximizing opportunities in a reduced 10-sport programme at Glasgow that featured fewer events than previous editions.
Para powerlifter Esther Nworgu opened Nigeria's gold medal account with a commanding win in the women's lightweight category, setting the tone for the team's campaign. Track star Ezekiel Nathaniel followed with gold in the men's 400m hurdles, securing Nigeria's first-ever gold in the event at the Commonwealth Games.
In field events, Goodness Nwachukwu claimed gold in the women's F42 discus throw after breaking her own world record, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi secured victory in the men's shot put with a dominant display that highlighted Nigeria's strength in power events.
