The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old man, Chima Ogumba, over alleged possession of an illegal firearm.

The arrest was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspect was arrested on Monday morning after operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, carried out a raid on his residence along Nkpor Road in Idemili North Local Government Area.

During the operation, officers conducted a search of the premises which led to the recovery of one pump-action gun and fifty live cartridges.

Ikenga stated that the suspect could not provide a satisfactory explanation for being in possession of the firearm and ammunition.

He added that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, has ordered a detailed investigation into the matter. The investigation is expected to determine the source of the recovered items, the intended use, and whether the suspect is linked to other criminal activities in the state.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the command's commitment to intelligence-driven policing, proactive patrols, and sustained operations aimed at preventing crime and improving security across Anambra State.

The police also urged residents to continue to support security agencies with timely and credible information.
