Coventry City have completed the signing of Nigeria international striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for a reported fee of £9 million.
The newly promoted Premier League side announced the deal on Monday, confirming that the 29-year-old forward has joined Frank Lampard's team ahead of the new season and will be available for selection immediately for their opening fixtures.
DailyVista247 gathered that the Nigerian striker completed his medical over the weekend after bidding farewell to his teammates at the City Ground during their final pre-season friendly against Stade Brestois, with the transfer valued at around $12 million in the current market.
The Super Eagles star expressed delight after completing the move, stating that he is excited to begin a new chapter with the Sky Blues. The former Liverpool man said he is looking forward to linking up with his new teammates and contributing to the club's ambitions in the top flight and making an immediate impact.
The 29-year-old spent six years as a Liverpool player on various loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron and Gent, before moving to Germany where he featured for Mainz and Union Berlin. He later joined Union permanently in 2021 before sealing a move to Nottingham Forest in 2022 for a club record fee at the time.
During his time at Forest, the Nigerian forward played over 100 games and scored crucial goals that helped the club maintain its Premier League status across multiple seasons. An injury from a collision with the post last season forced him to undergo surgery and miss several weeks of action before his return to first team activities and full training.
Coventry City are returning to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years and have been active in the transfer market to strengthen their squad for survival. The new signing becomes the club's sixth addition of the summer as they prepare for their opening game of the season against champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
The former Union Berlin striker has earned 10 caps for Nigeria and will reunite with compatriot Frank Onyeka at the club. Coventry believe his experience, physical presence and goal-scoring ability will significantly strengthen their attack for the challenging campaign ahead.
Reports indicate that Lampard's side will be hoping the new arrival can hit the ground running and help the team secure survival in the top flight. The Coventry faithful have already welcomed the Nigerian international on social media, with many expressing optimism that he will lead the line effectively for the Sky Blues this season and deliver important goals for the club.
