Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling cancer.
His death was confirmed on Sunday, August 23, 2026, by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional Instagram Live session, and by his colleague, veteran actor Jide Kosoko.
DailyVista247 gathered that the actor died at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, according to a burial announcement shared by Kosoko on Instagram.
Kosoko announced that the late actor will be buried today Monday, August 24, 2026, in his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State. His remains were moved to Ilaro on Sunday ahead of the burial ceremony scheduled for Monday.
The statement read, "With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of our dear colleague."
The news of his death comes just days after the family debunked a false rumour of his death. On Tuesday, August 19, a Facebook user falsely claimed the actor had died, prompting his daughter Lima Taiwo to describe the report as fake. The family clarified at the time that the 66-year-old was alive and receiving care.
Last week, Ogogo's daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, had appealed to the public for urgent medical assistance, revealing that their father was battling stage-four cancer. The family said they only became aware of the severity of his condition about three weeks ago.
In emotional videos shared on Instagram, Kira spoke about the challenges the family faced in seeking treatment and alleged that some individuals approached them with financial demands while offering assistance.
The actor's illness had drawn support from across the Nollywood industry. On August 21, veterans including Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, and Fausat Balogun held a special prayer session for Ogogo.
Taiwo Hassan Ogogo was one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba-language cinema, known for his fatherly roles, action films, and commanding presence spanning over three decades. He began his acting career in the 1980s and featured in hundreds of movies.
He is the only surviving child of his mother and often spoke about his family history and the importance of fatherhood.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, fans, and political figures. Senator Solomon Adeola described his death as a monumental loss to the creative and entertainment industry.
He is survived by his children, including daughters Kira and Lima Taiwo.
