Bus Driver Returns Over 400,000 Naira Forgotten By Passenger

By Stanislaus Obikwelu •September 12, 2026

In a time when stories of dishonesty dominate social media, a commercial bus driver in Abia State has restored faith in humanity after returning over N400,000 in cash forgotten by a passenger in his vehicle.

The driver, identified as Mr. Onyekachi Ikpendu, was celebrated by the Abia State Government for his act of honesty, integrity and responsible citizenship.

How It Happened

According to reports from the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, the incident happened on Friday, September 11, 2026.

Mrs. Nkechi John, a petty trader, boarded Ikpendu’s bus at Uzuakoli en route to the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia. She alighted at Ubani Market but inadvertently left her bag containing the money and other personal belongings in the vehicle.

The bag contained more than N400,000 in cash, which was money intended for her business, plus goods and personal effects.

Speaking with journalists at the terminal, Ikpendu said he only discovered the bag after the passenger had left. Instead of keeping it, he secured the bag and waited at the terminal for the owner to return.

Mrs. John, upon realizing she had left the bag in the bus, immediately rushed back to the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal located along the Umuahia axis where Ikpendu had kept the cash safe.

When she arrived, Ikpendu returned the complete bag with all the money intact. Eyewitnesses said the trader broke down in tears.

In his own words, the driver said: “No Amount Of Money Will Make Me Take What Is Not Mine”.

Abia Government Reacts

The Abia State Government, through the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, commended Ikpendu for his honesty.

In a statement, Dr. Ukaegbu said the driver’s action was a positive example of responsible citizenship and evidence of a changing mindset among residents.

He described the gesture as a display of integrity and sincerity and announced that the state government would honour the driver to encourage other commercial drivers in the state.

The commendation ceremony was held at the Ministry of Transport with officials from the Abia State Mass Transit Association present.

Why This Story Matters

In Nigeria, commercial drivers are often stereotyped negatively. Stories of overcharging, reckless driving and theft are common. Ikpendu’s action challenges that stereotype.

In 2025 alone, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) recorded over 2,000 cases of lost items in commercial vehicles in the Southeast alone. Less than 10% were returned.

This story proves that honesty still exists in the transport sector.

What To Do If You Forget Your Bag In A Commercial Bus

Many passengers panic when they forget items. Here are steps recommended by the Abia State Ministry of Transport:

1. Stay Calm and Recall Details: Write down the bus colour, license plate, route (e.g., Uzuakoli to Umuahia), time you boarded, and terminal name. In this case, Mrs. John remembered Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal.

2. Go Back To The Terminal Immediately: Most organized parks like Nnenna Oti have a Lost and Found office. Drivers are required to submit found items there at the end of their trip.

3. Report To Park Officials: Meet the Chairman or Secretary of the Drivers Union in that park. They have a manifest of all buses that left at a particular time.  4. Provide Proof Of Ownership: Describe the bag colour, content, and amount inside. Mrs. John was able to describe her goods.  5. Appreciate Honesty: While not required, a small appreciation encourages more drivers to return items.

Lessons For Drivers and Passengers

For drivers, Ikpendu’s reward is bigger than the N400,000 he could have taken. He has received statewide recognition, and the government is planning to make him an ambassador for ethical driving in Abia.

For passengers, always count your bags before alighting. Keep cash in a separate inner purse, not just in a market bag.

Conclusion

Onyekachi Ikpendu’s act is a reminder that integrity still pays. In a country facing economic hardship, returning N400,000 is not a small decision. His choice has brought honour to his family and to all commercial drivers in Abia State.

The Abia State Government says it will continue to reward honest citizens as part of its new orientation for a better Abia.
