Kidnapped Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After Over 50 Days in Captivity
Pupils and teachers who were abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in captivity.
DailyVista reports that the development was disclosed on Friday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his 𝕏 account.
According to Onanuga, the victims were rescued through the efforts of Nigerian security forces, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding their abduction.
Announcing the development, he wrote that the kidnapped pupils and teachers had been freed and reunited with their families following the successful operation by security personnel.
Onanuga stated: “Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been freed by their abductors. The kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by Security Forces.”
He also revealed that one of the rescued teachers expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for their role in securing the victims' release.
According to him, the teacher sent a message of gratitude to the President and security operatives following the successful rescue.
The release of the victims comes just hours after Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, disclosed that his administration was still working with relevant security agencies to secure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.
Speaking earlier on Friday after a meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Makinde had described the abduction as the first major security breach recorded in Oyo State after several years of relative peace.
The governor also reaffirmed his commitment to working with security agencies until all those abducted regained their freedom, while reiterating the need for greater security powers for state governments to enable them respond more effectively to security threats.
The successful rescue is expected to bring relief to the families of the victims and residents of Oyo State, who had anxiously awaited positive news since the abduction occurred more than seven weeks ago. Security agencies are yet to release further details about the operation or the circumstances surrounding the victims' rescue.
