Middle Conflict Escalates As Iran Confirms Strikes On 85 US Military Installations
Iran has claimed that it launched attacks on 85 United States military installations across the Middle East in retaliation for American airstrikes on its territory, marking a significant escalation in the growing conflict between the two countries. According to Iranian authorities, the strikes came after the United States carried out what it described as "powerful strikes" against targets in Iran's Hormozgan Province and the port city of Mahshahr.
Tehran said the attacks were a response to U.S. military action, while Washington maintained its operation was retaliation for attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, including Qatari and Saudi oil tankers.
As the situation deteriorated, air raid sirens sounded across Bahrain and Kuwait, raising fears that the conflict could spread further across the Gulf region, where several U.S. military bases are located.
Iran announced that it had targeted "85 U.S. military installations," though it did not immediately provide details of the locations hit or the extent of the damage. There was no immediate confirmation from U.S. officials regarding the Iranian claim or reports of casualties.
The latest exchange of attacks represents one of the most serious confrontations between Washington and Tehran in recent years and has heightened concerns over the security of critical energy infrastructure and maritime traffic in the Gulf.
The United States said its strikes on Iran followed attacks on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important oil shipping routes. Among the vessels reportedly targeted were tankers linked to Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
In a further escalation of pressure on Tehran, Washington announced it had revoked a waiver that previously allowed Iran to continue limited oil exports under an interim peace agreement signed between the two countries on June 17.
The move is expected to deal another blow to Iran's already strained economy and could further complicate diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
The rapid exchange of military strikes, tightening economic measures and heightened regional security alerts have intensified fears of a broader conflict involving multiple countries across the Middle East.
The latest escalation began after the United States military announced that it had launched a series of strikes against Iran in response to attacks on commercial vessels transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US military, it had begun launching a “series of powerful strikes” against Iran following attacks on commercial ships, including Qatari and Saudi Arabian oil tankers navigating the vital waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important maritime routes, with a significant portion of global crude oil exports passing through the narrow channel each day. Any disruption to shipping through the strait is closely watched by international markets because of its potential impact on global oil supplies and prices.
Iranian state media reported that multiple explosions were heard following the US operation. The reports said blasts occurred in the southern port city of Sirik, as well as in Bandar Abbas and on Qeshm Island, all key locations along Iran's southern coastline near the Persian Gulf.
The extent of the damage from the strikes and whether there were casualties were not immediately known. Iranian authorities did not immediately provide details on the targets that were hit.
