The development was disclosed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in a post on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. According to Romano, Zidane will be officially unveiled by the French Football Federation (FFF) in the coming days.
“Zinedine Zidane has signed as the new France coach until June 2030. The story has been confirmed as Zizou will be unveiled as the new head coach in the next days — back to work with France,” Romano wrote.
Reports indicate that the French Football Federation has scheduled a press conference for Tuesday, July 28, at its headquarters to present the next head coach of Les Bleus. FFF President Philippe Diallo is expected to lead the presentation following an Executive Committee meeting that same morning.
What Zidane Will Lead
If confirmed, Zidane is expected to take charge of France for upcoming competitions including the 2027 UEFA Nations League, Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
His appointment comes after the departure of Didier Deschamps, who managed the national team for 14 years. Deschamps led France to win the 2018 World Cup and reach the final of the 2022 edition. His final tournament ended with a semi-final loss to Spain and a 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff at the 2026 World Cup.
A Long-Awaited Return
Zidane, 54, has been without a coaching role since leaving Real Madrid in 2021 after his second spell in charge of the Spanish club. During his time at Real Madrid, he won three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018, along with two La Liga titles and several other trophies.
As a player, Zidane won the 1998 Ballon d’Or, was named FIFA World Player of the Year three times, and helped France win the 1998 World Cup.
While the reports have been widely circulated, the French Football Federation is expected to make the official announcement on July 28.
