OPay Debunks Viral Shutdown Rumour, Says Services Remain Fully Operational

By Stanislaus Obikwelu September 01, 2026

Leading financial technology company, OPay Digital Services, has debunked a viral publication claiming that the company would embark on a prolonged break from operations.

The false publication, which circulated widely on social media platforms on Sunday, claimed that OPay would shut down its operations from September 1, 2026, and urged customers to withdraw their funds.

DailyVista247 gathered that the company has dismissed the claim as false and misleading, assuring customers that its services remain fully operational.

In an official response shared across its verified social media platforms, OPay stated that the publication did not originate from the company and should be disregarded.

In a statement titled "This is FALSE," the fintech said, "OPay is not going on break by September. We are here, and we are going nowhere."

The company further advised customers and members of the public to examine the viral publication for inconsistencies and rely only on its verified communication channels for authentic information.

According to OPay, genuine users can easily identify its official communications, and the viral post contains several clear signs that it is not authentic.

The company said, "Always verify before you share. Filter the noise. Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates," adding the hashtag #OPayIsOkay to reassure customers.

Also reacting to the development, the Vice-President, Public and Government Affairs, OPay Digital Services, Dr. Maxwell Loko, described the viral publication as false, malicious and misleading.

Loko said OPay is not shutting down and cautioned customers against taking any action based on the fabricated information circulating online.

He said, "This post is false, malicious and misleading. OPay is not shutting down, and customers should not be misled into withdrawing their funds based on fabricated information."

He urged members of the public to disregard the publication and depend exclusively on OPay's verified platforms for official announcements regarding its services and operations.

The OPay executive further noted that deliberate attempts to spread false information capable of creating panic or undermining confidence in a financial institution could have legal implications.

The development has raised concerns over the growing use of fabricated digital content to damage the reputation of financial technology companies and trigger unnecessary concern among customers.

While there is speculation that the publication could be linked to competitive interests, no evidence has been publicly established to support such claims.

OPay therefore advised customers to exercise caution and verify financial or operational announcements through its authenticated communication channels before acting on them.

The company's clarification effectively puts to rest the viral claim that it would cease or suspend operations from September 1, 2026.
